Organization, systems and standards

Here is where entrepreneurs try to break the laws of mathematics.

Their objective is to make 1 + 1 + 1 = 111

A Profitable & Successful Business

A great business is worth more than the sum of the parts that created it.

Entrepreneurs do this by exploring a business opportunities and creating business models that deliver value. Entrepreneurship is about bringing ideas to life. They have chosen to go well beyond trading their own hours for dollars.

At some point it all shifts. The skills of entrepreneurship have to give way to the skills of business ownership. There is a big difference. Knowing the shift is there and being aware of the business owner skill set is a big advantage.

As the business owner you may choose to be part of the day to day running of the operation, but building a ROCK SOLID business usually means coordinating the efforts of many people, over a long period of time.

It is important to make the distinction between building the

Business Organization, Systems & Standards (BOSS) and being the Boss. Strong businesses have a well thought out BOSS and evaluate it on a regular basis to improve business performance and adapt to changing conditions.

Our philosophy is: don’t become the Boss; build the BOSS.

The reasoning behind this is as simple as it is effective.

On average employees are likely to work harder to fulfill the second purpose of the business by delivering value to the clients than they are to work hard just to make the owner rich.

The staff you bring into the business should see and understand the BOSS. To stay they need to live up to the BOSS. This is not you. It is not personal. That is not as harsh as it sounds. It is actually a much easier road for all to travel: you, the clients, the other employees, your suppliers and the business itself.

Just like the owner needs to connect the rewards they expect to get to the value they expect the business to deliver the employees need to connect their own rewards to the value they provide the clients and to the BOSS.

We have seen far too many businesses struggle because the owners try to please employees who are not connecting the value they deliver with the rewards they expect from the business. Some employees just feel entitled to their pay and don’t really contribute to the organization.

On the other side of the coin a well defined BOSS gives employees the opportunity to be successful. It clearly defines how the organization is designed to function, the roles & responsibilities of all involved, the business’ core systems that need to be followed and the standards that are expected to be met.

Businesses that follow the BOSS concept are actually more fun to work at and their people are more likely to see their work as worthwhile. It also becomes easier to build a real team atmosphere.

Entrepreneurs like things to be fluid and flexible, but as the business grows and adds people more and more structure is required to deliver consistent results.

We should also mention here that the ability to set and maintain standards is often one of the most difficult skills for business owners to learn; however, it continually proves to be one of the big keys to success.

One of the big challenges to implementing the BOSS is finding the time. The best approach is to take it one bite at a time. There are often some early wins available that save considerably more time than they take to implement. The same also goes for improving profitability.

Often it takes commitment and the assistance of a professional ROCK SOLID Business Coach to get the process started. The benefits to the operating performance of the business and the frustration levels of the owners are often astounding. It is a stage of growth that every business has to take at some point on its journey from start up venture to a large business.

We also strongly believe that everyone involved in the business should contribute to the ongoing development of the BOSS. No matter how long they intend to be around. Whether this job is a stepping stone for them, or a career, they should be prepared to leave the business stronger than they found it. This is actually a key to making the whole BOSS process work.

There are some really interesting ideas in the modules here.

Business is all about delegation – When your business project is completed, everything will have been delegated. This idea often leads to some interesting developments. The earlier a business evaluates its delegation and accountability processes the better.

The business as “Hub of Expectations” is a concept unique to ROCK SOLID and it is a really powerful idea that produces great results.
